memorial-day-354081_1920Make the Most of Memorial Day

We’re in the middle of May and you know what that means? Memorial Day is right around the corner! Do you know what else is right around the corner? Constant news segments, blogs, articles and write-ups all about how to put together a cheap last minute getaway for the Memorial Day weekend. We’re hit from left to right with last minute deals to Hawaii or Vegas or Cancun. While these information dumps can be useful to some; to those who’s idea of a “cheap” getaway doesn’t afford them one of the Hawaiian islands, or the small business owner who is too busy running their business to fly across the country, these ideas are just too unrealistic.

So what are you to do when you want a little downtime during the upcoming holiday weekend? We’ve pulled together some fun and inexpensive ideas to get out, even if only for a little bit, and make the most of Memorial Day. We promise you these fun ideas don’t have to take you away from work for too long nor will they break the bank. They are merely some suggestions to make sure that you, too, are able to ensure you get a little more “life” out of your work/life balance. And, we’re giving you them well in advance so you can clear your schedule!

  • Get to the Beach – Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer so why not head to the tried and boy-925319_1920true staple…the beach! Whether you live within driving distance of the ocean, or gulf, or a lake, or a river – get yourself situated right next to some water and feel your troubles subside. Just get there as early as possible because, you know, everyone and their mother will be out there.
  • Good Old Fashioned New England Clambake – While we’re talking about beaches, a fun and different activity is to put together a clambake. Something different aside from your typical backyard barbeque. Allrecipes.com has a great compilation of clambake recipes that are beach optional!
  • Camping – Camping is a great way to get out of the house and into nature. It’s a very inexpensive option for the Memorial Day weekend where you can RV, tent camp, yurt camp, car camp, you name it. Kampgrounds of America is a great option to find local sites or you can check your local area for campgrounds as well. Just be speedy as camping reservations can fill up quick!
  • Visit a National Park – Our country has wonderful national parks to visit and chances are, you have access to some nearby. The U.S. National Park Service’s website has an easy search map to find your nearest national park. A good hike is a great way to spend a day. *A friendly suggestion, remember to take your trash with you (same goes for camping). I live in Oregon, I’m kind of sucker for the environment and would be negligent if I didn’t tell you not to litter!
  • Go By Bike – Get out and explore YOUR neighborhoodbicycle-87205_1920. Hop on your bike and ride to your main street for some lunch or to a local park in your neighborhood. You’d be amazed what you’ll discover about your town. And the cycling will give you time with your thoughts. You know, Einstein rode a bike and has said, in regards to relativity, “I thought of that while riding my bicycle.” Imagine the ideas you could conjure up for your business?!
  • Rafting, anyone? – A fun and different activity would be to check your area for any rafting expeditions. If you’re an experienced rafter, you can go for the big boys, or if you’re like me, floating down the Clackamas River in the sunshine is the perfect way to spend a day off.
  • Paddle Boarding – This is a new one in which I’ve been seeing more and more people doing. It is a great workout and a fun way to spend some time on the water. A quick Google search in your area should tell you whether or not there are any available companies nearby.

While you are certainly not limited to our suggestions above, whatever you do, make the most of Memorial Day this year. It is important that we take advantage of time away from work, even when we are the bosses. Get out, even if for just a little bit of time. If none of these options looks appealing, there is always a backyard barbeque or some Memorial Day sales. And, if the weather fails you, there is always binge-watching!
